When Kai Trump left home for college, she was stepping into a completely different chapter of her life. But unlike many freshmen moving into a small dorm room, Kai was preparing to make an apartment her new home.
The 19-year-old University of Miami freshman recently gave viewers a look inside the space she has been settling into as she begins college and competes as a member of the university’s women’s golf team. The apartment tour revealed a polished two-bedroom, two-bathroom home with a separate office, kitchen, living room, guest bathroom, walk-in closet and even a fireplace that Kai singled out as one of her favorite features.

But the most interesting part of Kai’s move may not be what the apartment looks like.
It may be what her mother, Vanessa Trump, was willing to do for her — and what she refused to do.
Before Kai officially settled into college life, she and Vanessa headed to Target for a major shopping trip. Kai needed to prepare for living on her own, and her shopping list included many of the ordinary things that come with having a first apartment.
There were cleaning supplies, bathroom and beauty products, cooking utensils, cookware and other household necessities. Kai also picked up stress gummies and other items as she prepared for the transition.
For Kai, however, the experience was about more than simply filling a shopping cart.
“I’m excited for college. I’m nervous. I’m living on my own,” she said during the shopping trip, describing the strange mixture of excitement and anxiety that came with leaving home.
Vanessa was very much part of that process.
The mother-daughter shopping trip came after Vanessa had already been making trips between her home and Kai’s new apartment to help prepare the space. At one point, Kai admitted that she had made a mistake with a furniture delivery, meaning Vanessa had to drive to Miami and wait for several deliveries.
Vanessa joked about how exhausting the process had been, but her involvement showed just how much she was helping her daughter make the transition.
There was, however, one very important limit.
Vanessa made it clear that she was not going to clean Kai’s apartment for her.
“We need cleaning stuff, because she will be cleaning her own apartment,” Vanessa explained during the shopping trip.
When Kai jokingly suggested she could simply call her mother if her bathroom became dirty, Vanessa had an answer.
Kai was going to learn how to clean it herself.
It was a surprisingly ordinary parenting moment inside a very unordinary family.
Vanessa could help with furniture deliveries. She could shop for household necessities. She could help her daughter get the apartment ready for college. But once Kai was living on her own, some responsibilities were going to belong to Kai.
That detail gives the apartment story a different meaning.
From the outside, Kai’s new home looks polished and comfortable. The kitchen has a large white island and modern appliances, while the living room features a large white couch, television and fireplace. Her bedroom has a clean, neutral design, and the second bedroom has been turned into an office where she can do her college work.
But Kai also made sure the apartment felt personal.

Among the decorations are images connected to places and people important to her, including Aspen, New York and her family. She displayed a photograph of herself playing golf with her grandfather, Donald Trump, while other pieces reflect her love of skiing and her life as a content creator. Her YouTube creator awards are also part of the space.
Those details make the apartment feel less like a showroom and more like a reflection of the person Kai is becoming.
She is no longer simply living at home with her family.
She is building a space of her own.
And that transition comes after what was an emotional beginning to her college journey. In an earlier vlog, Kai documented how difficult it was to leave her family and start college. She became emotional while saying goodbye and later dealt with homesickness and illness during her first days at school, eventually returning home before getting back into her routine.
Now, however, the tone appears different.
Kai has begun showing viewers the place where she will study, relax, prepare for golf and experience a new level of independence. She has described having her own space as a positive part of the experience, even while continuing to travel home regularly for golf training.

That may be the real story behind the apartment.
It is not simply about how large the space is or how different it looks from a traditional college dorm.
It is about a young woman learning what it means to leave home.
Her mother can help her get settled, but she cannot follow her into every part of adulthood. There are deliveries Kai has to organize, decisions she has to make, college work she has to complete and, yes, bathrooms she has to clean.
For Vanessa, refusing to do that one task may have been one of the simplest ways to remind her daughter that independence comes with responsibility.

And for Kai, the new apartment may ultimately become more than a comfortable place near campus.
It may become the first place where she learns how to make a life that is truly her own.
