DANGEROUS ESCALATION IN THE PERSIAN GULF — REPORTS OF ATTACKS ON U.S. BASES

Tensions across the Persian Gulf have sharply escalated following reports that Iran has launched a series of missile and drone attacks against U.S. military facilities in the region.

Iranian state-linked media, citing military sources, reported that Iranian forces had begun targeting U.S. positions across several Gulf countries. Reuters has previously reported Iranian attacks against U.S. facilities in Gulf states, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Reports from the region described explosions and air-defense activity as authorities moved to protect civilians. In the United Arab Emirates, a powerful explosion was reported in Abu Dhabi, while aviation restrictions were imposed amid the heightened security situation.

The Al Dhafra Air Base in the UAE, which has hosted U.S. military forces, was reportedly among the locations targeted by Iranian missiles. Iranian state media has also identified American-linked facilities in Qatar, Bahrain and Kuwait as targets during the continuing confrontation.

In Bahrain, reports of smoke and explosions emerged around the Al Jufair area, home to the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet. The Fifth Fleet’s area of responsibility includes the Gulf, Red Sea, Arabian Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean.

In Qatar, authorities urged residents to remain indoors and follow shelter-in-place instructions as air-defense systems responded to reported incoming missiles near Al Udeid Air Base, a major U.S. military facility. Iranian attacks on Al Udeid have also been reported during earlier phases of the conflict.

The latest developments come amid an already prolonged confrontation between Iran and the United States, with repeated missile, drone and military exchanges threatening to widen the conflict across the region.

Officials in affected countries have urged residents to stay away from military installations and follow official emergency instructions. The situation remains fluid, and reports of individual strikes, damage and casualties may change as authorities assess the aftermath.

The escalating attacks are also raising renewed concerns about regional security, commercial aviation and the safety of shipping through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies.
