Cameron Hamilton, the former acting head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), was removed from his position after publicly opposing efforts to dismantle the agency during congressional testimony. His remarks openly contradicted the plans supported by Donald Trump and members of his administration, who have advocated reducing FEMA’s authority and transferring more disaster-response responsibilities to state governments.
The administration confirmed Hamilton’s dismissal shortly after his testimony. David Richardson, a longtime FEMA official, was appointed as interim leader while the administration continues pushing its broader emergency-management reforms.
Hamilton’s removal reflects growing tensions between political leaders seeking to shrink the federal government’s role in disaster relief and career emergency officials who believe national coordination remains essential during large-scale crises. The decision also follows other controversial developments inside FEMA, including the firing of officials linked to a reported $59 million initiative that provided housing for undocumented immigrants in high-end hotels during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Trump has consistently criticized FEMA’s spending and operational structure, arguing that state governments should take primary responsibility for handling disasters within their borders. Supporters of the administration’s approach believe reducing federal involvement would lower costs, improve efficiency, and allow states to respond more quickly without relying heavily on Washington.
Opponents, however, warn that weakening FEMA could create serious challenges for states facing major hurricanes, floods, wildfires, or other emergencies. They argue that many states lack the financial resources, trained personnel, and logistical support necessary to manage large-scale disasters independently. Critics also fear that reducing FEMA’s role could lead to slower response times and unequal disaster recovery efforts across the country.
