A newly released poll suggests that New York’s 2026 gubernatorial race could become highly competitive if Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik secures her party’s nomination. According to a survey conducted by J.L. Partners, incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul currently leads Stefanik by only three percentage points in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup.
The poll, which surveyed 500 likely New York voters, found Hochul receiving 46 percent support compared to Stefanik’s 43 percent, while 11 percent of respondents remained undecided. The results indicate that Stefanik, a close ally of President Donald Trump, may have growing appeal among voters ahead of the upcoming election cycle.
Public opinion data from the survey also showed that 37 percent of voters view Stefanik favorably, while 32 percent hold an unfavorable opinion of her. Stefanik officially launched her campaign for governor last week after years of serving in Congress as the representative for New York’s 21st Congressional District. She previously held the role of House GOP conference chair from 2021 to 2025.
Meanwhile, Hochul is facing political challenges from within her own party over policy disagreements with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. One major issue involves Mamdani’s proposed $700 million initiative to make city buses free for riders. Hochul has expressed concerns about the financial impact of the plan, particularly after significant state investments in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
The disagreement highlights growing tensions between moderate and progressive Democrats in New York. While Hochul supported Mamdani during the campaign, she has resisted several of his expensive proposals, including tax increases on wealthy residents to fund expanded social programs such as free child care and fare-free transit. Political observers say these divisions could influence both state and local politics in the years ahead.
