On November 29, 2025, a second birthday party in Stockton turned into a devastating tragedy when gunfire erupted at the Monkey Space event hall on Lucile Avenue. Nearly 100 guests, including many children and families, had gathered for the celebration when several masked gunmen dressed in dark clothing suddenly opened fire shortly before 6 p.m. The joyful atmosphere instantly became one of fear and chaos as guests ran for cover while bullets tore through the building. Investigators later recovered more than 50 shell casings tied to at least five firearms, highlighting the intensity of the attack.
Witnesses described terrifying scenes in which parents shielded children with their bodies to protect them from the gunfire. Four people were killed in the shooting, including 8-year-old Maya Lupian, 8-year-old Journey Rose Reotutar Guerrero, 14-year-old student-athlete Amari Peterson, and 21-year-old Susano Archuleta, who was praised for sacrificing himself while trying to protect others during the attack.
In addition to the fatalities, 13 others suffered injuries ranging from minor wounds to critical trauma. Local hospitals activated emergency mass-casualty procedures to treat the victims. Beyond the physical injuries, the emotional impact on survivors ā especially children who witnessed the violence ā has remained severe, with many families reporting anxiety, nightmares, and ongoing emotional distress.
The investigation is being led by the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies. Authorities believe the shooting was targeted, though an exact motive has not yet been confirmed. Investigators later identified two vehicles connected to the case, and officials say progress continues as forensic and digital evidence is analyzed. A $130,000 reward remains available for information leading to arrests and accountability.
