chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), a common condition that affects blood flow in the legs. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt shared the news during a briefing in Washington, D.C. after noticeable swelling in the president’s lower legs drew public attention.
CVI occurs when the valves inside leg veins weaken or fail to function properly, making it harder for blood to return to the heart. This can cause blood to pool in the lower extremities, leading to symptoms such as swelling, discomfort, heaviness, and sometimes varicose veins or skin changes. The condition is especially common among older adults, and Trump was 79 at the time of his diagnosis.
White House physicians conducted a detailed medical evaluation to confirm the condition and rule out more serious issues. This included Doppler ultrasound scans of both legs, which verified the presence of CVI. Importantly, doctors found no evidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), arterial disease, or heart-related problems. An echocardiogram also showed that the president’s heart structure and function were normal. Medical staff described the condition as both “benign” and “common,” reassuring the public that Trump remains in strong overall health.
The evaluation followed recent appearances in which Trump appeared to move more slowly, and swelling around his ankles became visible. Photos circulating online also showed bruising on his hands. Officials explained that the bruising was likely caused by frequent handshaking combined with daily aspirin use, which can increase susceptibility to minor bruises.
According to the White House, CVI is a manageable condition and does not interfere with the president’s ability to perform his duties. Standard treatment includes wearing compression stockings, elevating the legs when possible, staying physically active, maintaining a healthy weight, and regular monitoring. Trump is reportedly following these recommendations while continuing his busy schedule.
The announcement sparked widespread reactions online, with many supporters expressing encouragement and support. Health experts note that while CVI requires attention, it is rarely dangerous when properly managed. The disclosure highlights the importance of routine medical evaluations and reinforces the administration’s effort to remain transparent about the president’s health while assuring the public that his condition is stable.
