Chaos at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner After Security Incident Forces Evacuation

A high-profile security incident disrupted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton on the evening of April 25, 2026, prompting the emergency evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, senior administration officials, lawmakers, journalists, and invited guests.

According to reports, the incident unfolded roughly 20 minutes after the President and First Lady arrived at the annual event, commonly known as the “Nerd Prom.” Witnesses described a sudden surge of activity as Secret Service agents and law enforcement personnel rushed to respond to a security threat near one of the hotel’s entrances.

Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Allen, a teacher from Torrance, California, who allegedly attempted to force his way through a security checkpoint while carrying a shotgun and several knives. Officials said Secret Service agents confronted the suspect in the hotel lobby before he could reach the ballroom where the President and hundreds of guests were gathered.

During the confrontation, one Secret Service agent was shot at close range. Officials said the agent’s protective body armor prevented more serious injuries, and the officer was transported to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said investigators believe the suspect acted alone and confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the public after the individual was taken into custody. Federal investigators have since launched a broader investigation, including a search of the suspect’s California residence, as they work to determine a possible motive.

President Trump later praised the quick actions of the Secret Service and local law enforcement, calling their response “fantastic” and crediting the injured agent’s protective equipment with saving the officer’s life. He also condemned the alleged attacker, describing the individual as “sick.”

Although organizers initially hoped to continue the annual dinner following the security breach, the White House Correspondents’ Association later announced the event had been canceled. Officials said the gathering is expected to be rescheduled at a later date.

The incident has renewed attention on security procedures surrounding major political events, particularly those that bring together the President, members of Congress, senior government officials, journalists, and other prominent public figures. As the investigation continues, authorities remain focused on determining the suspect’s motive while the injured Secret Service agent recovers.
