Ashley Biden, the daughter of former President Joe Biden, has filed for divorce from her husband, Dr. Howard Krein, after 13 years of marriage, according to court records filed in Philadelphia.
The 44-year-old submitted the divorce petition to the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Monday. Ashley and Krein married in June 2012 in Greenville, Delaware, after being introduced by her late brother, Beau Biden, in 2010.
Because divorce proceedings in the jurisdiction are sealed, the filing does not reveal the reasons behind the couple’s separation. Dr. Krein, a plastic surgeon, has largely remained out of the political spotlight while continuing his private medical practice.
Throughout their marriage, Ashley and Krein kept a relatively low public profile. Ashley has focused on social advocacy, nonprofit work, and initiatives addressing issues such as criminal justice reform and community development.
During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, Ashley reflected warmly on her wedding while introducing her father. She recalled that although Joe Biden was serving as vice president at the time, he took an active role in planning the celebration, saying he “literally set up the entire reception.”
On the same day she filed for divorce, Ashley shared a photo on Instagram showing herself walking through a park with a thumbs-up gesture. The post featured Beyoncé’s song Freedom and included a message that many interpreted as reflecting a new chapter in her life.
“New life, new beginnings, means new boundaries. New ways of being that won’t look or sound like they did before,” she wrote.
Ashley did not directly mention the divorce in her post, and neither she nor Dr. Krein has publicly commented on the filing. Since the court records remain sealed, additional details about the separation have not been made public.
