President Donald Trump on Wednesday sharply criticized former President Barack Obama while discussing U.S. policy toward Iran, referring to him as a “stupid son of a bitch” during remarks about the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement.
Trump has long opposed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the deal negotiated under the Obama administration that placed restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief and other economic incentives. Trump withdrew the United States from the agreement during his first term, arguing that it failed to prevent Iran from pursuing nuclear ambitions and provided Tehran with significant financial benefits.
Speaking about the agreement, Trump claimed that Iran took advantage of the deal and mocked the Obama administration’s approach.
“They tried to bribe their way out, and you know what the Iranians did — they laughed at Obama, and they said he’s a stupid son of a bitch,” Trump said.
The remarks are the latest in a long history of criticism by Trump toward the Obama-era agreement, which remains a subject of debate among policymakers. Supporters of the JCPOA argue that it successfully limited Iran’s nuclear activities and provided a framework for international monitoring, while critics contend that it was too lenient and failed to address Iran’s broader regional activities and missile programs.
