Trump and Melania Trump Switch Helicopters After Precautionary Landing During UK Visit
President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were required to switch helicopters during a trip in the United Kingdom after Marine One experienced a mechanical issue, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
Leavitt said the helicopter made a precautionary landing because of a hydraulic system concern.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the pilots landed at a local airfield before reaching Stansted Airport,” Leavitt told reporters. “The president and first lady safely boarded the support helicopter.”
The flight was scheduled to take approximately 20 minutes from the landing zone near Chequers, the British prime minister’s country residence, to Stansted Airport. The transfer ultimately took nearly 40 minutes because of the aircraft change.
The incident occurred during Trump’s visit to the United Kingdom, where he met with King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The visit included discussions on economic cooperation, technology, energy, and international issues.
On Thursday, Starmer highlighted a proposed £250 billion mutual investment package between the United States and the United Kingdom, describing the relationship between the two countries as a natural partnership.
Following meetings at Windsor Castle and Chequers, Trump and Starmer attended a reception with business leaders. Starmer referred to their agreement as a “tech-prosperity deal,” while Trump said it would create billions of dollars in economic opportunities and expand U.S. access to the United Kingdom’s aerospace supply chain.
Trump also said the agreement would strengthen cooperation in areas including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, fusion energy, telecommunications technology, and civil nuclear power.
Among the projects discussed was a partnership between U.S.-based X-energy and British energy company Centrica to deploy small modular nuclear reactors in the United Kingdom. Trump said the initiative could generate significant economic activity, create thousands of jobs, and provide power for approximately 1.5 million homes.
The president also emphasized the growing energy demands associated with artificial intelligence development, saying reliable electricity supplies will be essential for future technological growth.
Trump returned to the White House on Friday following the conclusion of his overseas trip.
