The White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C., took a dramatic turn after a violent security incident interrupted the evening shortly after President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump arrived. About twenty minutes after their entrance, panic spread through the hotel as Secret Service agents and police rushed to respond to an immediate threat near the ballroom hosting the event.

Authorities identified the suspect as 31-year-old Cole Allen, a teacher and Caltech graduate from Torrance, California. According to investigators, Allen allegedly forced his way through a security checkpoint while carrying a shotgun and several knives. Officials said he appeared to be moving directly toward the area where President Trump and other high-ranking officials were gathered.

Secret Service agents confronted the suspect inside the hotel lobby before he could reach the ballroom. During the struggle, one agent was shot at close range. Fortunately, the officer survived because of his bulletproof vest and was later transported to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

The incident triggered an immediate evacuation of the President, the First Lady, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, lawmakers, and numerous guests attending the annual event. Interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll later stated that investigators believe Allen acted alone and confirmed there was no continuing danger to the public after his arrest.

President Trump later praised law enforcement officers for their rapid response and described the attacker as a deeply disturbed individual. Organizers initially hoped the dinner could continue, but the White House Correspondents’ Association officially canceled the event later that evening.

Federal investigators are now searching the suspect’s California residence in an effort to determine a motive. Meanwhile, the incident has reignited national conversations about security at major political events and the challenges of protecting public officials while preserving open democratic traditions.
