Iran has sharply escalated tensions in the Middle East by launching ballistic missiles at Tel Aviv, with reports claiming some carried cluster warheads. Iranian officials said the attack was retaliation for the assassination of a senior Iranian security commander allegedly killed in an Israeli operation. Explosions and flashes were seen across central Israel as missiles struck populated areas, damaging infrastructure and killing at least two civilians. The reported use of cluster munitions has raised serious international concern because such weapons scatter multiple smaller explosives over wide areas, leaving dangerous unexploded fragments that can threaten civilians long after the attack.
The strike is part of a broader regional conflict that has intensified since early 2026. Iran has reportedly carried out additional attacks against Israeli targets, U.S. military bases, and allied facilities throughout the Gulf region, including locations in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Tehran says these operations are in response to repeated assassinations of Iranian officials and military figures, which it blames on Israel and its allies.
Israel and the United States have responded with airstrikes inside Iran targeting military installations and elements of the country’s nuclear infrastructure. Israel’s missile defense systems, including Iron Dome and Arrow-3, have intercepted many incoming missiles, but officials acknowledge that the volume of attacks and the use of advanced warheads have made full protection difficult.
The growing conflict is also affecting the global economy. Energy prices have surged amid fears of disruptions to Gulf oil infrastructure and shipping routes. International leaders continue to call for restraint, but diplomatic efforts have so far failed to stop the violence. With both Iran and Israel signaling readiness for further military action, fears are increasing that the conflict could expand into a much wider regional war.
