Cameron Hamilton, the recently dismissed acting administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has publicly defended the agencyās disaster response performance under the Biden administration while also expressing criticism of certain policy directions associated with the Trump administration. His removal from office came abruptly and has since drawn attention amid broader debates over the future of federal disaster management in the United States.
Hamilton was summoned to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) headquarters in Washington, D.C., where he was formally informed of his dismissal. According to a source familiar with the matter, the decision was carried out by Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Troy Edgar alongside Corey Lewandowski, a senior adviser to President Donald Trump. The circumstances surrounding the timing of the firing have prompted questions, particularly because it came just one day after Hamilton testified before Congress.
During his appearance before a House Appropriations subcommittee, Hamilton directly addressed ongoing discussions about the future structure of FEMA. He pushed back against recent remarks made by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who had suggested that FEMA could be eliminated entirely, with its responsibilities shifted to individual states. President Trump has also previously supported the idea of reducing or dismantling FEMA in favor of a more decentralized, state-led emergency response system.
In his testimony, Hamilton stated clearly, āI do not believe it is in the best interests of the American people to eliminate the Federal Emergency Management Agency,ā emphasizing his view that a centralized federal agency plays a critical role in coordinating disaster response and providing national-level support during large-scale emergencies.
Following his removal, FEMA confirmed the leadership change and announced that David Richardson would assume the role of Senior Official performing the duties of FEMA Administrator. The agency stated that Hamilton was no longer serving in his position but did not provide additional details regarding the decision.
Hamilton, a former Navy SEAL, had reportedly considered resigning when the Trump administration first took office. However, he ultimately chose to remain in his role after encouragement from FEMA personnel who urged continuity during the transition period.
His departure occurs amid a broader restructuring within FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security. Early in the Trump administration, DHS dismissed four FEMA employees over what officials described as an āegregiousā misuse of funds. Those employees were accused of bypassing established leadership channels to authorize payments related to housing migrants in hotels in New York City.
The controversy escalated further after public comments by Elon Musk, who claimed on social media that FEMA had spent approximately $59 million in a single week on migrant housing in what he described as āluxury hotels.ā Musk argued that such funds should instead be directed toward disaster relief for American citizens affected by emergencies. DHS officials have since indicated that they may attempt to recover the funds in question.
At the same time, President Trump has renewed his criticism of FEMAās effectiveness, particularly during a recent visit to North Carolina, where communities continue to recover from Hurricane Helene. He argued that the agency has not performed adequately in responding to disasters and suggested that states should take on a larger share of responsibility.
Trump has also proposed that disaster response could be handled more efficiently at the state level, claiming that local governments are better positioned to act quickly and at lower cost. He pledged that his administration would work closely with state officials to speed up recovery efforts while reducing federal involvement in emergency management.
