Trump’s Fox News Interview Draws Attention After Lengthy Gulf of America Remarks
A live Fox News interview between President Donald Trump and anchor Maria Bartiromo sparked widespread discussion after viewers focused on Trump’s response to a question about oil shipments and international energy markets.
During the phone interview, Bartiromo asked Trump about his claim that hundreds of “supertankers” were heading toward the Gulf of America — the name Trump uses for what was previously known as the Gulf of Mexico — to purchase U.S. oil and gas following tensions involving Iran.
Instead of immediately addressing the tanker reports, Trump spent much of his answer discussing the renaming of the body of water, emphasizing his role in promoting the new name.
“It used to be called the Gulf of Mexico,” Trump said. “Now it’s called the Gulf of America because of me.”
Trump described the name change as one of his accomplishments, saying residents in Gulf Coast states were proud of the decision.
“I used to say, ‘Why is it the Gulf of Mexico when we have 93% of the frontage?’” Trump said. “I said, ‘I think I’m going to change it to the Gulf of America, what a beautiful name.’”
He also credited online mapping services for adopting the terminology, saying the change became widely recognized after platforms such as Google Maps updated their references.
“We had lawsuits, and we won everything,” Trump said. “It’s now the Gulf of America, which I’m very honored by.”
Bartiromo attempted to return the discussion to the oil tanker question, asking, “But do you expect—” before Trump continued speaking.

Trump then joked that he had considered naming it the “Gulf of Trump” before deciding against it.
“I was thinking about calling it the Gulf of Trump, and I decided not to do it,” he said. “I think that was wise. That one maybe wouldn’t have worked out.”
Following the interview, social media users debated Trump’s performance, with some critics questioning whether he directly answered the energy-related question. Others defended his remarks and argued that the focus on the name change reflected a major policy achievement.
The exchange quickly became a talking point online, with supporters and opponents offering sharply different interpretations of Trump’s comments and communication style.
