Vice President JD Vance warned that fraud affecting federal programs may be far more widespread than previously recognized as he led the first meeting of a new White House task force dedicated to tackling the issue nationwide.
Speaking from a federal office building in Washington, Vance highlighted a major case in Minnesota as a clear example of a larger, systemic problem. He suggested that similar schemes are likely occurring across multiple states and programs, potentially costing taxpayers billions of dollars.
According to Vance, the newly created Task Force to Eliminate Fraud will play a central role in addressing the issue. The initiative, announced earlier by President Donald Trump during his State of the Union address, is designed to coordinate efforts across federal agencies to detect, prevent, and prosecute fraud tied to government-funded programs.
Vance emphasized that the task force represents a “whole-of-government” strategy. It brings together senior officials from various departments to strengthen oversight of programs that provide essential services such as food assistance, housing support, and healthcare.
He argued that fraud not only wastes taxpayer money but also deprives vulnerable Americans of critical resources. By cracking down on abuse, the administration aims to protect both public funds and the integrity of key social programs.
The effort includes participation from high-level officials and will require each federal agency to review its own systems. Agencies are expected to introduce tighter safeguards, including improved identity verification, stronger monitoring tools, and more aggressive investigations into suspicious activities.
The push follows findings from Minnesota, where authorities estimate that billions in federal funds were improperly obtained over several years. With more than 100 people charged, the case underscores the scale of the problem and the need for stronger enforcement measures moving forward.
